SCSECS 2002

The 27th annual SCSECS meeting will convene on glistening South Padre Island, along the tropical Texas Gulf coast, from February 21 to February 24, 2002.

As befits the beachfront locale, the meeting will be built around (but by no means will be limited to) a lively and piquant theme: "The Submerged Eighteenth Century: White Sands, White Sails, and Even a Few White Males."

An overall theme with so fluidly submarine an emphasis makes room for many sub-themes and sub-questions: whatever became of that great raft of "canonical" authors that made the eighteenth century so lovable in the first place? what, on the other hand, are the undiscovered or lost secrets of the eighteenth-century? where should we look for all the jewels and novelties of the era? what about sun, fun, and all the asethetical delights of our early modern forebears? how about all those ships, from the Bunyan-reading banyan boats of the Puritans to the spice-bearing vessels of the East India Company to the "lunar" crafts mentioned by Dryden, Kant, and Wilkins? where in the world is that miscellaneous included in the ark of eighteenth-century studies? will the aqua-lung of the modern intellect (and internet) provide breathing room deep within the sea of Augustan inquiries? is there anything that is excluded by such a theme (the answer to that one is the only "no" that one will hear at a SCSECS meeting!)?

This party-hearty noble savage
could be YOU! In addition to the formidable intellectual activities at SCSECS 2002, a huge range of social, recreational, and dining activities are planned. Outings include a nautical evening and a Mexican fiesta-plenary (another SCSECS innovation). Plus there will be plenty of sun, sand, water, and warmth at one of the Gulf of Mexico's premier tropical resorts!

Academic celebrity-seekers will not be disappointed. The erudite and renowned Howard Weinbrot has agreed to serve as senior plenary speaker. Celebrated intergalactically for his keen insight, huge cache of scholarship, and vivacious wit, Professor Weinbrot has announced as his topic "The Politics of Samuel Johnson and the Johnson of Politics: An Innocent Looks at a Controversy."

The annual Laura Crouch Junior Plenary Lecture, a lecture featuring the best in young and upcoming talent, will be delivered by no less than Professor Alexander Pettit, the widely-applauded expert on Restoration controversial literature and editor of Eliza Haywood and dozens of other authors, who will unveil another SCSECS mystery as he reveals his secret techniques for "Editing [Excavating?] the Submerged Century: Terrible Texts, Wacky Works, and the Mighty Mandate of the Moment."

All papers presented at the conference will be automatically entered in the running for the newly established but already much-coveted SCSECS Presidential Prize.

See you at the beach!
